Lice Bite Pictures

Lice are a species of parasite that feed on human blood.  They tend to live their entire life on the body of the host, completing several different generations in a short period of time.  While many people think that lice only infect people's hair, there are a variety of type that infect both animals and humans.  Humans can get lice almost anywhere on their body that has hair.

The life cycle of a louse is very short, lasting several days at most.  During their adulthood, the female can lay a number of eggs, which starts the infection cycle all over again.  Several species of lice are also known carries of disease.

A person's head with several lice bites and nits. Head lice often bite the person on the scalp and the back of the neck, but they thankfully stay confined to these areas.  They are, however, very contagious, spreading quickly between people who either share grooming implements or are in close confines.  This picture shows lice bites on the scalp with several nits attached to the hair follicles.  Nits (lice eggs), are glued onto the host organism's hair so they do not fall off.
Lice, like many other tiny parasites, are naturally fairly translucent, but turn a red color once they have fed.  This is due to the blood they just ingested showing through their skin.  Lice feed often throughout the day, with most of their adult life being split between feeding and reproducing.  Infestations of lice should be treated immediately to prevent them from causing infection or disease, or potentially spreading to other host organisms. A close up of a louse on a comb. This shows a head louse on a comb.  The treatment of head lice involves the use of special shampoo and a special comb.  The shampoo kills all of the lice, while the comb allows for the removal of all nits and lice that are left on the scalp.
Body lice can be especially dangerous, since they are easier to transmit, more difficult to kills, and have a higher chance of spreading disease.  This image shows body lice bites, which tend to look worse than other lice bites.  This is due to the density of hair and the type of skin.  Scalp is made of a stronger skin, since it has so many hair follicles in such a small space.  Skin on the body is easiest to damage when scratching lice bites since it has less strength than the scalp. Lice bites found on the body rather than the head.

My daughters caught lice sevral times throughout elementry school. It was extremely hard to get rid of. Even with the most severe case (wich was fearfully bad) She did not have big bites on her head. The bits where very small and unless you were looking you wouldn't have been able to see them.
